May Ann Hume

May Ann Hume was the daughter of David Hume and Janet Tulloch, and was born in Westray on 8th June 1861. Her birth registration gives her name as Marjory Ann, but in most other records her name is given as May Ann. In the 1871 census she was recorded with her parents and twin sister Betsy at Croft No. 6, Westray. In 1881 she was a servant at Netherhouse, Westray, and in the 1891 census she was a servant at Langskaill.

May Ann gave birth to two illegitimate children:

  • David Hume<, born 13th December1879. According to his Death registration, he was a fisherman. He married Jemima Moodie (born about 1876, daughter of David Moodie and Jean Seatter) in March 1910, and died at Surrigarth, Westray, on 3rd November 1946, aged 66 years.They had at least one son, John D. Hume (born in 1910), who signed his father's Death registration.

  • Isabella Hume, born 22nd September 1883. In 1908 she married John Mackay, a farmer, born in 1872, the son of William Mackay and Ann Drever. She died at Langskaill on 2nd March 1967, at the age of 83 years.

May Ann married William Drever, a farmer and the son of her employer at Langskaill, in 1893. William's parents were Samuel Drever and Catherine Inkster, and he was born in Westray in 1853.

May Ann and William had at least four children:

  • John Inkster Drever, born 24th November 1893.

  • James William Drever, born 28th December 1895.

  • Samuel Drever, born 5th November 1899.

  • Mary Jane Catherine Drever, born 14th October 1902.

William Drever died at Langskail on 24th April 1927. May Ann died two years later, aged 68 years, on 13th June 1929. They are buried in Westray.
