Introduction / Westray Grays / Archibald Gray / Mary Ann Gray and John Tulloch / William Tulloch and Elizabeth Drever

Janet Tulloch and David Hume

Janet Tulloch was the youngest known child of William Tulloch and his wife Elizabeth Drever, and was baptised 11th July 1836 in Westray. In the 1841 census she was at Nether Feold, Westray, with her father and siblings, and in 1851 she was at Nearhouse with her uncle James Tulloch and his wife Mary.

On 28th April 1859, Janet married David Hume (born in Westray in 1828, the son of John Hume and Margery Keldie). They are known to have had three daughters, all born in Westray:

  • Betsy Hume, born 8th June 1861.
  • May (Marjory) Ann Hume, born 8th June 1861. She married William Drever.
  • Mary Hume, born 24th August 1872. She married Henry Drever Rendall (born in 1868, son of David Rendall and Mary Drever) in 1894, and died in 1913. Henry died in 1917, and they are buried in Westray.

In the 1861 census the couple were at Mount, Westray, and Janet's name was given as Jessie. David's occupation was road labourer. In 1871 they were at Croft No.6 with twins Betsy and May Ann, and David was a "farmer of 12 acres."

According to the gravestone, David died in November 1875, but the civil registration gives his date of death as 5th December 1875.
