Betsy Hume

Betsy Hume was born in Westray on 8^th June 1861, the daughter of David Hume and Janet Tulloch. In the 1871 census she was recorded with her parents and twin sister May Ann at Croft no. 6, Westray. In 1881 she was in her mother's household at Mount, Westray, and in 1891 she was a servant at Skail. In the 1901 census she was a servant at Langskail.

Betsy never married, but she had three children:

• Jane Pottinger Hume, born 7^th December 1879. She died 18^th February 1954, at the age of 74 years, and is buried in Westray.

• Betsy Hume, born 11^th November 1886. She married Daniel Harcus (son of Samuel Harcus and Francis Leslie) in 1912.

• David Hume, born 26^th September 1891. He married Helen (Ellen) Seatter in 1921, and died 17^th February 1966, aged 74 years.He is also buried in Westray.

The Marriage registration of the younger Betsy gives her mother's occupation as crofter, but when Betsy herself died, aged 68 years, on 27^th August 1929, no occupation was given.
