Thomas James Balfour Mason

Thomas James Balfour Mason, the oldest child of Thomas George Mason and Charlotte Parker, was born on 18th May 1893 in Dunedin, NZ. As a young child, he developed polio and lost the use of his right leg. He married Jessie McAllister Steel on 3rd February 1919 in the Registrar's Office, Wellington, NZ. Jessie was born on 16th December 1889 in Larkhall, Glasgow, Scotland. Tom and Jessie had two children:

  • Catherine Charlotte McAllister Mason, b. 18th Oct 1919, Lower Hutt, NZ. She married Allan George Harwood on 1st Sep 1941, at Motupipi Church, Takaka, NZ. Catherine (known as Kay) and Allan had four children, including Janette McCallister Harwood, b. 12th Nov 1942, d. 21st Jan 2001, Wellington, NZ. Janette married and had three children who live in New Zealand. Kay subsequently married Wally Brough; they had no family, and she d. 9th Sep 1982, Nelson, NZ.
  • Thomas Douglas Mason, b. Jul 1922, Shannon, NZ and d. 1st July 1923, Palmerston North, NZ

On 26th December 1938, Tom married Dorothy Drew Dick at St. Stephen's Church, Ponsonby, Auckland, NZ. Dorothy, daughter of James Dick and Laura Cunnington, was born in London on 6th March 1898. She emigrated to New Zealand around 1935. They had one daughter who married and had three children. They and their families live in New Zealand.

Tom and Dorothy lived in Hamilton where Tom worked as an accountant. He was a keen sportsman, holding regional and national administrative posts in swimming and motorcycle racing, and an active yachtsman. He also made significant contributions in the civic and cultural life of Hamilton. Tom died in Hamilton m 18th July 1959. Dorothy later remarried and died 7th February 1982, in Waikanae, NZ.
