Ann Dunnet Harcus

Ann (Annie) Dunnet Harcus was the first child born to Isabella Dunnet and Robert Harcus. She was born in Eday 18th August 1870. As a young woman, aged 24, on 22nd June 1895, she arrived in New York aboard the City of Rome from Glasgow, destined for Chicago. About three weeks later, on 10th July she married Thomas Heddle McLachlan in Chicago. Thomas was an Orcadian, born 13th June 1866 in Kirkwall to Alexander McLachlan and Jane Heddle. He had emigrated about 1888. Sadly, Thomas died of tuberculosis on 2nd February 1898 in Chicago.

Annie returned to Kirkwall and worked for a while in her father's shop. On 28th January 1909 she married James Heddle Taylor in the Paterson Manse, Kirkwall. James, born in Kirkwall 13th July 1864 to Barbara Heddle and James Taylor, was the first cousin of Thomas McLachlan - their mothers were sisters, (Barbara Heddle later married a Leslie.) James was a merchant seaman and had sailed all over the world. Annie and James ran the shop in St. Catherine's Place, Kirkwall from 1910 until 1918 when it was taken over by Annie's sister.

James died 29th June 1942 and Annie died 10th March 1950. Annie had no children.
