Mary Harcus and George Wishart

Mary Harcus was born on Eday on 18th July 1872 to Robert Harcus and Isabella Dunnet. She married George Wishart on 13th June 1901 in Kirkwall. George, born 1st October 1866 in Stromness, was the son of John Wishart and Elizabeth Smith; both originally from Orphir. (Mary's first cousin Anne Harcus married George's brother James. Mary and George had one daughter born in Stromness:

George was a watchmaker and jeweller in Stromness and had a shop there. In 1911 the family immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada where George worked at Eaton's Store.

George died in Seattle, Washington of heart disease on 3rd February 1919.

It is not known when or under what circumstances the family went there, but they were in Seattle in 1918. Perhaps the fact that Mary's brother Will Harcus lived there had something to do with their move.

Soon after George's death, Mary and Anna returned to Kirkwall, and Mary took over the shop at St. Catherine's Place.

Mary died 10th May 1933 in Kirkwall.
