Barbara Gray and Robert Rendall

Barbara Gray, christened in Westray on 19th May 1814, was the fourth and youngest daughter of William Gray and Ann Sandison. She married Robert Rendall in Westray on 16th January 1841, and a few months later, at the time of the 1841 census, the couple were staying at Gorn with Barbara’s uncle George Gray.

Only two children are known to have been born to Barbara and Robert:

• Robert Rendall, born 2nd April 1842

• William Rendall, born September 1849, and died 12th November 1850

Barbara and Robert, and their son Robert, were again recorded at Gorn with George Gray in the 1851 census. In the 1861 census they were at Phlehall, Westray.

A Westray gravestone has the following inscription

Erected By Barbara Gray In Memory Of Her Son William Rendall Who died Novr 12th 1850 Aged 14 Months And Her Husband Robert Rendall Who Died Dec 24th 1868 Aged 53 Years

Barbara died on 20th August 1889, at the age of 76 years.
