William Young Gullion

William Young Gullion was the son of James Gullion and Janet Scott, baptised on Eday, on 25th February 1830.

He immigrated to North America probably in the 1850s. Where he went initially is not known. Some information indicates he may have been in the Northwest Territories.

What is known is that William was farming in Pierce County, Washington in 1870; he is recorded in that census as William Young, age 39, with his 15 year-old daughter Jannett (Jennet, Janet and other variations) who had been born in Washington Territory.

After 1870, William was found fairly regularly in local records, as a farmer in the Steilacoom precinct of Pierce County, sometimes as W. Y. Gullion and sometimes as William Young. In the 1880 federal census, he is listed as W. Y. Gullion and in 1900 he is listed as William Young in the Lake City precinct. His marital status was always given as single.

William died on 28th April 1902 in a local Tacoma hospital. According to his obituary, in which he was identified as William Young, he had been making his home with his daughter at Hillhurst (in Pierce County). William is buried in the Old Settlers Cemetery, Gravelly Lake, Lakewood, Washington, where his headstone identifies him as William Y. Gullion
