Janet Gullion and William Benston

Janet Gullion, daughter of William Young Gullion, was born on 12th March 1856. According to her death certificate, her mother was Jane Shelton, thought to have been a Snohomish Indian. Janet married William Benston on 14th February 1877 in Pierce County, Washington. (William was the grandson of Adam Benston who married, as his second wife, Grace Gullion, aunt of Janet's father. William's father, also named Adam, was son of Adam Benston and his first wife.)

In 1880, William Benston was a farm laborer in Pierce County. By 1900, William had died and Janet was living with her three youngest children in Hillhurst. The census indicates she had given birth to five children of whom four were then living. Her known children are:

  • Isabella Benston, b. abt 1877
  • George Benston, b. Feb 1879
  • Frederick Benston, b. Jan 1883
  • Beatrice Benston, b. Sep 1896

Janet later married John Miller. She died on 25th August 1936 in the Tacoma home of her daughter Beatrice, and is buried in the Old Settlers Cemetery in Pierce County.
