David Drever and Margaret Tulloch

David Drever, who was born about 1839, was the oldest of the children of John Drever and Barbara Groat and was with them after the move from Hammar to Windywa. He appears with them in the 1871 census when he is described as a fisherman. He had been the teacher at the Pharay school in 1868.

He had married Margaret Tulloch from Eday in the Session House there on 8th April 1868. Margaret was the daughter of Peter Tulloch from Eday and Christina Hay, who originally came from Sanday. She was born on 5th October 1844.

David and Margaret moved to Kirkwall, living in Shore St at the time of the 1881 census. By 1901, they were living at 49 Victoria St. David’s occupation at the time of the 1881 census was general labourer, while Margaret was a dressmaker. They had no family.

A niece, Barbara Harcus, was staying with them in Victoria St in 1901. She was a daughter of David’s sister Barbara Drever and her husband John Harcus and was born in Kirkwall. Her occupation was given as tailoress. At this time, David was working as a grocer.

He died in Victoria St on 5th April 1918 at the age of seventy nine. Margaret was back in Eday subsequently and died there at Sealskerry on 1st May 1926. She was eighty one.
