Isabella Pottinger Leslie and George Stout

Isabella Pottinger Leslie (c. 6th November 1836) was the youngest of the children of George Leslie and Jean Hourston.

She, like her elder sisters Christian Leslie and Jean Leslie, married into the same Stout family who had originated in Fair Isle. Isabella’s husband was George Stout (b. 27th December 1837, Westray) whom she married on 18th September 1862.

George was the son of George Stout and Ellen Stout. (See Stout Genealogy)

Isabella and George had five children, the first three born at Airy and the other two at Cleat Storehouse:

  • Margaret Stout, born 17th January 1863 who married John McGill in Edinburgh in 1892. John was a grocer and confectioner, and later an insurance agent. They had family. Margaret died in Edinburgh on 12th October 1938.
  • Helen Stout, born 11th September 1864
  • Jean Stout, born 31st March 1867
  • Isabella Stout, born 3rd February 1874 who married widower James Scott (b. 9th December 1874) on 22nd December 1921. James was the son of John Scott and Joan Mowat. Isabella died on 12th August 1951.
  • George Stout, born 14th December 1877; d. 28th November 1893 at Storehouse

Isabella’s widowed mother, Jean Hourston, was with the family at Airy in 1871. George’s occupation was that of boatman.

The 1881 census sees George described as a fisherman.

George died there on 6th March 1919. Isabella died in Pierowall on 10th April 1925. She was eighty eight.
