Jessie Ann Reid Drummond and Robert Allan

Jessie Ann Reid Drummond (b. 10th August 1867) was the second of the four children of Alexander Drummond and Jemima Benston.

She married her second cousin, Robert Allan (b. 9th June 1863) at the Ness, Pharay on 3rd November 1886. Robert was a son of James Allan and Ann Drummond.

Jessie’s paternal grandfather, John Drummond, was a brother of Robert’s maternal grandfather, Stewart Drummond. These two brothers formed the Drummond lines at the houses on Pharay. (See Drummond family page)

Jessie and Robert moved to Kirkwall and had five children:

• James Allan, born abt. 1888 who went to the US in 1907 and was in Racine Co. Wisconsin in 1920

• Alexina Mary Allan, born 3rd January 1889, Blackhall, Kirkwall who married William Sinclair (b. abt. 1888) at the Paterson Manse on 15th August 1923. He was the son of James Sinclair and Margaret Mowat.

• Robert Allan, born abt. 1891

• Annabella Drummond Allan, born abt. 1893; died 22nd January 1980

• William A Allan, born abt. 1895

Jessie was at No 9 Bridge St Close, Kirkwall with the three youngest children in 1891. Robert was a seaman and was enumerated with his parents at Fribo in Westray. These Allans were from Eday and there is no connection immediately apparent with the Allans in Westray.

In 1901, both Jessie and Robert were at 54 Victoria St, Kirkwall with their five children, Jessie’s mother and three boarders. Jessie’s mother died there in 1923.

Jessie died on 21st January 1944 and Robert on 2nd March 1946.
