Alexander Drummond and Jemima Benston

Alexander Drummond (b. 7th March 1840) was born on Pharay and a son of John Drummond and Janet Reid.

He stayed at the Ness, Pharay after marrying Jemima Benston (b. 10th April 1839) on 1st December 1864. She was a daughter of William Benston and Ann Scott.

Three years earlier, Alexander’s older brother John Drummond had married Jemima’s older sister Margaret Benston and they stayed at Bredakirk, the Benston family home on Eday.

Alexander and Jemima had four children who were born at the Ness:

• William Stewart Drummond, born 30th September 1865 who married (1) Isabella R Cutt and (2) Lauretta Gall

• Jessie Ann Reid Drummond, born 10th August 1867 who married Robert Allan

• Mary Drummond, born 14th October 1870 who married David Taylor

• Jemima Drummond, born 9th October 1874. Jemima was a dressmaker and died in Kirkwall on 17th December 1896. She was staying with her mother in the Holm Road, Kirkwall in 1891.

Alexander Drummond died at Blackhall, Kirkwall on 10th July 1889.

Jemima was with her youngest daughter in the Holm Road in 1891 and with her daughter Jessie and her family at 54 Victoria St in 1901. Jemima died there on 16th April 1923. She was eighty three.
