The sons James and William were born at Windywa, Eday. Robert died on 16th September 1875 due to a farming accident. Their son John Flaws Reid had emigrated to Canada. Charlotte followed him, leaving Eday on 10th May 1883, with her sons Robert, James and William. They boarded the SS Nestorian. They were accompanied by a Fergus family from Westray, consisting of brothers James (who married Betsy Reid Sinclair), David, George and William (who married Ida Estalla Rae Rendall). They were cousins of Ida Estella Rae Rendall, whom John Flaws Reid married after the death of William Fergus. They arrived at Point Levi, Quebec on 28th May 1883 and went by train to Winnipeg and from there to Brandon, Manitoba. They purchased wagons, yokes of oxen, cows, etc. That Spring was very wet, which made the journey from there to York Colony, NWT very difficult. William also came down with the measles. The day after their arrival (14th June 1883), those travelling obtained their homesteads from the York Farmer’s Colonization Company. They obtained some further supplies and travelled the six and a half miles from York Colony to John’s homestead. Charlotte died on 6th June 1905 at Pelican Lane, Assiniboia, NWT, which was the home of her son, Robert Reid. She was buried in the Orkney Cemetery. | |||
