Thomas William Jones Dunbar

Thomas William Jones Dunbar was born in Dublin about 1865 to Robert Dunbar and Harriet Dunbar.

He was a gas engineer when he married Jemima-Ann Hewitt, the daughter of Robert Hewitt and Jessie Crow in Edinburgh on 14th Oct 1885. Jemima was from Gifford in Yester, Haddingtonshire (now East Lothian) and born on 24 Oct 1853. They were both living at 4 Rankeillor St at the time.

They had one son:

  • George Dunbar (b. 3 Dec 1887 at 6 Moncrieff Terr, Edinburgh) who married Janet Anderson, the daughter of blacksmith Thomas Anderson and Helen Cant on 28th Mar 1913. Janet was born abt. 1889.

In 1901, Jemima and son George were at Mowatt Place in the Newington area of Edinburgh and in 1901 at 9 Sumerhall, Newington when Jemima’s occupation is given as laundress.

She died in hospital in Edinburgh on 31st May 1934. Her usual residence was at St Bernard’s Place.

Thomas was an insurance agent and staying with a Gourlay family, perhaps a mile away from Jemima and George on the other side of the Meadows, at 21 Drumdryan St in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh at the time of the 1891 census. Also, there was Mary Tulloch from Westray in Orkney and a 2 month old son, Thomas Tulloch. Thomas W Dunbar, or William as he was to be known, is considered to be the father.

William and Mary are thought to have had four children. Henry and Jean were born during a period in Garrison Place in Falkirk and Edward in Dumfries in 1897.

Valuation rolls around 1895/96 show Thomas W Dunbar with the occupation of insurance agent.

It is unclear where Mary and the children were at the time of the 1901 census. However, Thomas William Dunbar, age 36, appears as a boarder at 75 Water Street, Carmarthen in Wales. He again is shown as born in Dublin and his occupation is given as a commercial traveller.

Thomas married Jessie Fletcher on 16th March 1901 in Herefordshire. Jessie was born on 21st Dec 1883 in Worcester.

They had three children:

  • John Kenneth Dunbar (b. 2nd Dec 1902, Easington, Durham; d. 22 Jun 1981, Ealing, London) who married Patricia Waterford (b. 13 Feb 1907, Lewisham, Kent; d. 15th Oct 1955, Southall, Middlesex. They had a daughter Heather E Dunbar in 1932.
  • Cecelia Primrose Dunbar (b. 16th March 1903, Clerk St, Edinburgh; d. 1976, Norfolk) who married Charles James Best (b. abt. 1902) on 8th June 1929 in Willesden, Middlesex.
  • Evelina Alice Dunbar (b. 5th Apr 1904, St Giles, Edinburgh) who married Leslie Arthur Short (b. abt 1902) on 4th June 1917 in Willesden, Middlesex.

Thomas variously worked as an insurance agent, in the gas industry and as an athletics coach.

Son Edward Dunbar was with the family of Thomas and Jessie at the time of the 1911 census.
