Archibald Logie

Archibald Logie was the son of Thomas Logie and his wife Mary Gray, and was born in Westray on 18th December 1839.

He married Agnes Mowat (b. about 1840, daughter of Thomas Mowat and Janet Duncan) on 26th December 1860 and they had seven known children:

  • James Logie, b. 6th January 1862. He became an apprentice house carpenter, and died of pthisis (tuberculosis) in Pierowall on 26th September 1879 at the age of 17 years.
  • Jane Duncan Logie, b. 8th June 1864. Her occupation was given as "House servant" when she died at the age of 23 in Pierowall on 6th July 1887, also of pthisis.
  • Mary Logie, b. 16th May 1866. She was also a domestic servant and victim of pthisis; she died in Pierowall on 4th July 1884, age 18 years.
  • Agnes Logie, b. 17th September 1868. She married Thomas Thomson.
  • Thomas Logie, b. 4th December 1871. He married Tomima (Mima) Corse.
  • Ann Logie, b. abt 1875. She married William Rendall.
  • Archibald Logie, b. 25th May 1878; lived only two hours

In the 1861 census, Archibald and Agnes can be found in Pierowall, where Archibald was a house carpenter.

Agnes Mowat died 25th May 1878, after giving birth to a premature son who only lived two hours.

Archibald married Jane Hewison (daughter of Murdoch Hewison and Barbara Harcus, and widow of John Bews), on 29th November 1878. In the 1881 census their household was shown as follows:

Jane Hewison died on 5th April 1893, of consumption (i.e. tuberculosis). Her daughter Barbara (born 26th October 1879) also died of consumption, on 30th May 1896, at the age of 16.

Archibald's third marriage was to Jessie Seatter (born about 1851, daughter of John Seatter and Elizabeth Seatter), and took place on 21st May 1894.

Archibald died in Pierowall on 25th August 1913. He had had eight children, but only one of them survived him. Jessie died on 20th February 1937, also in Pierowall. A transcription of the Logie family gravestone is shown below:
