"Erected in memory of John Hercus who died 25 June 1884, aged 82 years. Also Catherine Ann Burgess, beloved wife of James Drever, who died 17 January 1862, aged 20 years." John Harcus from Doggerboat was swept off his feet and drowned in Lavey Sound in 1884 on coming back from the Holm, having crossed when the tide was out.
He was the widower of Jean (Jane) Drummond (stone 12). That stone also refers to her parents as well as a brother and sister. Catherine Ann Burgess was a granddaughter of John Harcus and Jane Drummond and a daughter of Robert Burgess and Elizabeth Harcus. She married her cousin, James Drever from Hammar, but died at twenty of tuberculosis. | ||||||
