Seatter

At various times there were five different families having the surname of Seatter (or a variant) on Pharay, as well as a teacher:

• John Seatter and Jemima Reid were at Hammar from 1900 until about 1915

• John Seatter and Ann Drever were at Quoy, then Lakequoy, from about 1904 until 1937

• Brothers Peter and Jimmy Seatter from Newcastle, Westray were at Cott briefly in the mid 1920s

• Robert Seatter and his family from Rousay were at Doggerboat from about 1944 until 1946 when they left because the school closed

• James Seator and Clara Margaret Harcus were at Holland from 1944 until the evacuation in 1947

Mary (M. I.) Seatter was the teacher at the Pharay School from 1914-1915 and again from 1916-1919. She was the daughter of former teacher James Harcus and married George Seatter, son of John Seatter and Ann Drever.

Since all the Seatter families come from or have Westray ancestry, there may be some familial relationship between them going back far enough through generations. Robert Seatter and James Seator were second cousins by way of their paternal grandmothers. Robert Seatter’s father, also Robert was son of (another) Robert Seatter and Sibella King. James Seator’s father Edward Seator was son of George Seator and Helen King. Sibella King (b. 1858) and Helen King (b. 1857) were sisters, daughters of Edward King and Helen Scott.
